The Avebury Society was founded in 1994 by local residents and others to work for the benefit of the area five kilometres around Avebury including the whole of the World Heritage Site.

The Society is affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology.

Its objectives are to:

  • protect and improve the environment of the Avebury area;
  • encourage people’s enjoyment and knowledge of its history, farming, monuments and buildings;
  • promote good planning and design within and around the designated World Heritage Site; and
  • foster community life in its villages and hamlets.

The Kennet Valley Hall has been the ‘home’ of the community amateur dramatic society since 1981 and a pantomime is performed every year over 4 performances to an audience of around 400 people.

It is a community venture which has local performers from 9yrs old to retired people and it draws heavy from the local primary school for its stars and chorus.

Members of the community are actively involved in the production of the pantomime from September right through until the end of January.

Without the hall none of these community centred activities would happen.

The pantomime is the largest annual event in the community.

The hall is the home ground for the club on many Sunday afternoons throughout the season. New players or social members are always welcome.

Meetings on Monday evenings throughout the year with guest speakers and presentations

Table Tennis has a strong tradition at the hall which goes back many years.

The Junior Section takes place on Fridays between 17.45 and 19.15. Players` ages range from 8 upwards and are coached from the day they join. Over the years many of our juniors have excelled in local junior championships and gone on to play in adult leagues.

Four senior teams play at the Hall, an A team play in the Devizes League Division 1 on Tuesdays, and the B,C & D teams play in the Devizes League Division 2 on Tuesdays or Fridays. The four teams represent a wide range of abilities catering for all standards.

Friday is also Practice Night for both team members and those who just want to play socially

If you have a child who would benefit from a disciplined introduction to this enjoyable sport we would be happy to hear from you. Or, perhaps you used to play yourself and would like to pick up a bat again, in which case give Richard a call on 07568 648468 or email him on richard.ramsden@gmail.com .

The U3A in Kennet makes frequent use of the Kennet Valley Hall; it provides an excellent venue in a convenient location with good (and free) parking. It is an ideal size for our larger meetings, where we normally have an invited speaker. The availability of a built-in projection screen, public address system and hearing loop, is of particular benefit and, in addition, the excellent kitchen facilities allow us to easily provide food and drink for our members. A convenient alternative in the area just does not exist

Kennet Valley School have adopted the Hall for a wide variety of activities. It is a vital resource in our local community, as it allows our children to have a large, safe open space to build their sporting ability, which include teamwork as well as opportunities to play many different sports. As a school we also use it to hold larger events such as a Music concert and an annual nativity play. These are important local events, where the children can show that they are confident young individuals.

Without the hall we would not be able to play the large variety of sports that we currently do, which would mean our children were less prepared for sports competitions and festivals – this would mean that they were also less confident going into their events.

We have been hiring the Kennet Valley VH for our main social events since 2016 as we have no suitable facilities ourselves at our church in Marlborough. We hold a lunch party to which everyone in our Parish is invited. On average we serve a two- course hot meal to up to 80 people in October /November. We also hold our annual Grand Draw. The event has become more and more popular, since we started holding it at KVH. The Hall facilities are superb!  It is always very warm, clean and comfortable, and has good facilities, including a reliable sound system. There is ample space to seat everyone. The kitchen is well-equipped and has a good serving hatch space. We have also found it very useful to have the use of the mobile hot cupboard. The side room has a large additional fridge and table, making it ideal for our Bar. The cloakroom facilities are excellent, and the entrance lobby ideal for greeting our guests. We are currently planning a summer BBQ party but were disappointed to find every Sunday suitable for us already booked! It is the only Hall within a reasonable distance to provide the quality and size of Hall and grounds that we need. Hence, we are now changing our date to September, rather than go elsewhere.

Last, but not least, we would like to express our appreciation of the courtesy and helpfulness of the Hall Booking Secretary, who always answers messages promptly and is most patient and thorough in showing us round each time to remind us of how everything works. We now consider KVH our second Home

We are an independent group for textile artists, enthusiasts and learners established to take the place of the Marlborough & District Embroiderers’ Guild (after the national Guild dissolved its branches).  Our members have a wide variety of interests and skills and we are keen to expand the scope of our activities.  We meet on the first Monday of the month with additional days for workshops and online Stitch & Chat sessions.  For details of our programme and to find out more please visit our website at:  https://textilesandstitch.co.uk/
